There are many ways to secure a garage door while you’re gone. It will be a little different for everyone depending on the hardware you have. Some door rails come equipped with an L-shaped metal rod to stick through your garage door rail, blocking it from raising.  A secure method if your door doesn’t have a built-in stopper is to put a padlock through one of the holes on your garage door railing. Try to place it as close as possible to one of the wheels when the door is closed so that the door has no more than a few inches before would be stopped. A set of locking pliers or C-clamps can also be used in a situation where a padlock or locking bar may not be available.

A Battery Backup is a system installed between your outlet plugin and the garage door opener itself. It is a 12v battery that will allow your door to open and close during a power outage. They generally only have a few uses in them before being fully discharged. While not essential, they have an added bonus if you’re someone who uses a wifi or bluetooth garage door opener, as it will keep those systems online as well.

Your garage door should have a rope with a handle hanging from it. This disconnects the door from the opener mechanism and allows it to move freely. You should be able to lift the door if there are no other issues in the mechanism. The release cord should only be pulled while the door is in the closed position to prevent it from slamming closed unexpectedly. It is also very important that the door be reconnected in the same position that it was disconnected in, and that the garage door opener is not used before reconnecting.
